Book Review: Real Life Jesus
This is a
great book by Mike Cain (Pastor of Emmanuel Church, Bristol). The book is an
adventure as Cain takes us through John’s gospel exploring the character of
Jesus, and how that affects us and our superficial view of the world and Jesus.
The blurb of
the book says ‘In John’s gospel, Jesus Christ claims to be the one who can give
us the life with God we were created for. Mike Cain unpacks Jesus’ claim and
shows us why it cannot be ignored: sin, forgiveness and restoration affect us
personally.’
The author shows
us that having the view that Jesus is irrelevant in life just isn’t a viable
stance if we look properly at John’s account of Jesus. He constantly brings us
back to an image of a whale stranded on the beach, and draws the comparison
between a whale being made for the sea and human beings being made for a
relationship with God. We’re simply stranded without him.
Cain is able
to portray Jesus as he actually is, not the caricature that so many think of
him as. He was a man with a mission, and that mission was to save people by
dying on the cross and being raised from the dead.
Read it, it’s
great for those following Jesus and it’s also great to give to friends who aren’t
at the moment. It’s an easy read, entertaining, insightful and very helpful.
